Lake Street Now Runs to West Beach: The Marquette Greenway's First Fall in Miller

October 8, 2026

The trail that matters most in Miller Beach this October is the newest one. A 2.7-mile paved section of the Marquette Greenway opened with a ribbon cutting on June 6, 2026. It connects the Indiana Dunes Douglas Center on Lake Street to West Beach and crosses a new bridge over Grand Boulevard on the way. The paved surface meets ADA standards, and grades stay under 5%.

The Greenway got its first summer. Then the August 11 derecho hit, and the National Weather Service recorded a 99-mph gust at Gary/Chicago International Airport. Seven weeks later, the paved route is the dependable one. The older sand trails and wooden boardwalks are where the uncertainty sits. That shift changes how a Saturday in Miller works this fall. Lake Street, the trail, and the beach now function as one route, and it starts at the train platform.

One Continuous Line From the Platform to the Lake

The pieces fit together in a way they didn't before June. The South Shore Line's Miller station is at 760 S. Lake Street and has free parking. From there, the Lake Street Bike Path runs 1.5 paved, off-street miles toward Lake Michigan. It passes the Douglas Center and connects directly to the Greenway. The Douglas Center at 100 North Lake Street is the main trailhead. Its paved lot is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. According to a local Miller Beach trail guide, there are also access points at Grand Avenue and Montgomery Street.

The west end lands at West Beach, 376 North County Line Road. That parking lot is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Along the way, the Greenway runs through the dunes' "ridge and swale" topography, past wooded dunes and flat blowouts, with views of Long Lake. Sources measure it differently. The ribbon-cutting report says 2.7 miles, and the local trail guide puts the paved Douglas-to-West Beach route at 3.2. Plan on roughly three miles each way.

The National Park Service's 2026–27 park guide calls the Douglas Center to West Beach section complete. Other Greenway sections near Mnoké Prairie, and from Dune Park Station to the USGS facility, are still under construction. For Miller, the finished piece sits right at the end of its own commercial street.

Where the Corridor Stands After the Storm

The derecho brought trees down across the city. Visit Miller Beach Gary posted photos of fallen trees across a dunes trail, near the Marquette Park entrance, and on the park's disc golf course in the days after the storm. The same September 3 post says Marquette Park and Gary's beaches stayed open throughout.

The Park Service last updated its storm-repair list on September 25. It names closures and partial closures at Dunewood Trace, Pinhook Upland, Hobart Prairie Grove, and the Heron Rookery Trail. None of them are on the Miller corridor. The same page warns that trails still open may have damaged boardwalk handrails or other infrastructure.

Route Surface Status heading into October 2026
Lake Street Bike Path Paved, off-street, 1.5 miles Runs from the Miller station past the Douglas Center to the Greenway
Marquette Greenway, Douglas Center to West Beach Paved, ADA-compliant Complete per the NPS 2026–27 park guide; not on the September 25 storm-repair list
Paul H. Douglas Trail through Miller Woods Mostly sand and packed soil; no bicycles Listed by NPS among trails with intermittent flooding
West Beach Dune Succession Trail Wooden boardwalk with a 270-stair climb Boardwalk replacement scheduled for fall 2026
Marquette Park and Gary beaches Mixed Open, per Visit Miller Beach Gary on September 3

The Paul H. Douglas Trail is the classic Miller Woods hike, with black-oak savanna, dunes, and wetlands on the way to Lake Michigan. NPS still lists it among the park's occasionally flooded trails, alongside Tolleston Dunes, Glenwood Dunes, and Pinhook Upland. The Dune Succession Trail at West Beach is known for its 270-stair climb to a high dune overlook. Its 45-year-old boardwalk is due for replacement. A May 2026 PanoramaNow report said work was expected to start after Labor Day, with a 270-day performance period from the notice to proceed. The report also said the project may include removing the central staircase. The NPS alerts snapshot reviewed for this post didn't list a closure there. Check the park's alerts page before planning the stairs.

So this fall, the paved Greenway connects Miller's sand trails and boardwalks while sections of them are in flux. It's also the only one of the three that allows strollers and bikes.

The Douglas Center Sets the Saturday Clock

The Douglas Center is open Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central Time, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. It will also close on Veterans Day, November 11, and on Thanksgiving, November 26.

The October schedule, updated September 28, gives the building a reason to be more than a parking lot:

  • Miller Woods Hike, ranger-led from the Douglas Center vestibule, 1 to 3 p.m. every Saturday in October except October 24. That leaves October 3, 10, 17, and 31.
  • Breakfast with the Birds, Sunday, October 4, 9:30 to 11 a.m.
  • Super Kids Scavenger Hunt, Wednesday through Sunday all month, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Critter Time Open House, every Sunday, 1:30 to 2 p.m.

The Park Service notes that programs can change or be canceled because of weather or staffing. As of September 28, no public November ranger schedule had been posted. The ranger hike gives walkers a guided way into Miller Woods on the days when the sand trail is in good enough shape to lead.

Lake Street at Both Ends of the Walk

Lake Street now sits on the route itself, which makes a mid-morning start and a late-afternoon finish easy to plan. Here's one way to arrange a Saturday around the 1 p.m. hike:

  1. Start before 11. Vibrations Health, Wellness & Juice Bar at 430 S. Lake Street is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with last juice-bar orders at 3:20. Clutch Bagels & Spreads at 444 S. Lake Street is a few doors away. Tiny's Restaurant & Bar at 555 S. Lake Street serves breakfast, lunch, and coffee. Neither Clutch nor Tiny's has posted fall hours, so check before you go.
  2. Browse on the way north. Indie Indie Bang! Bang! at 625 S. Lake Street opens at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. on Sundays. Through October 9, the free exhibition "Shape Games" by Teneia Dilosa and Catherine Sollman is on view at 540 S. Lake Street.
  3. Meet the ranger at 1. From the Douglas Center, either join the Miller Woods Hike or head west on the paved Greenway toward Long Lake and West Beach.
  4. Finish at the lake end of Lake Street. Beach Box is the new tavern at 720 N. Lake Street, in the building that was home to Ono's Pizza for decades. Its posted hours differ on Saturday opening time, noon on its events page and 4 p.m. on its contact page, so confirm before you go. A short drive or ride inland, Eighteenth Street Brewery at 5725 Miller Avenue is listed as open from noon to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Dialogue Wine Bar at 601 S. Lake Street has evening events on its calendar.

The Miller Beach Arts & Creative District calendar fills in the rest of the season. Yoga + Beer is October 10, noon to 3 p.m., at 18th Street Tap Room, 5725 Miller Avenue. All in Jest Trivia is October 23, 7 to 10 p.m., at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts, 540 S. Lake Street. A Lovingkindness Meditation yoga workshop at the Gardner Center is set for November 7, 9:45 a.m. to noon.

The Paved Spine Keeps Growing East

The Miller section is one link in a longer build. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources awarded grants to Porter and Burns Harbor to extend the Greenway. Porter's $2.1 million covers 1.04 miles from Babcock Road to Howe Road. Burns Harbor's $5 million covers 0.82 miles from the current terminus near Ind. 149 to Babcock Road. That work includes a boardwalk under the Norfolk Southern Railroad and over the Little Calumet River. Some construction on the trail network causes closures for now. NPS attributed partial closures of the Glenwood Dunes Trail, scheduled April through December 2026, and the Little Calumet River/Mnoké Prairie Trail, scheduled May through December 2026, to Greenway construction, and said those dates could shift.

For Miller, that leaves the finished section at its doorstep this fall: a paved route from the Lake Street storefronts to West Beach. The Douglas Center is open Wednesday through Sunday, and a ranger leads a hike on four of October's five Saturdays.
